This link to an informative article  was sent to me by a listee - just
passing it along. It explains the delay in  getting helos to the site.

My original post was prompted by my  surprise at two apparent facts:

  1. The lengthy time it took to reach the crash site (explained in  this
    article)
  2. A survival suit is "only" good for an hour or so in winter  waters.

Having been through ice over deep water, struggling for several  minutes to
get back up onto it, followed by a 45 minute walk home, I have no  desire to be
un-prepared again!

It was just announced that the downed helicopter has been located with 12 to
14 bodies inside. A remotely piloted submersible is being used to recover
the bodies and it is anticipated that all the bodies will be recovered
within 24 hours.

So, they were unable to get out. This is very sad.
