Really appreciate the GroupMe setup for rare bird sightings. However, is there a way to turn off notifications of “<name> has joined the group” and “<name> has left the group”? I imagine all users only want to be notified when there is a sighting, not news of participant status.

That only appears if you get the GroupMe messages as regular SMS text
messages as well.
If you don’t want that, and only want to get notifications through the
GroupMe app (which I recommend), follow these steps:
Open the GroupMe app and make sure you’re on the homepage (you’ll see
“Chats” at the top).
Click your profile picture (circle) on the bottom right side of the
screen.
Now on the next screen, below your name and the larger profile icon
(circle), click Settings.
Now in the Settings menu, turn off “Enable SMS Delivery”, under the
section called Message Delivery.
Now you will only get alerts through the GroupMe app, and will only get
texts about sightings. No more “x has joined”.
This SMS option should be turned off by default, but some users seem to get
it turned on without doing anything.
While you’re in settings, you can also turn off “Like Notifications”, which
will make it so you aren’t notified when someone “likes” a text you send.
As a reminder, please see the CT RBA group rules and only send texts of
sightings of birds species that are on the reportable list.
