Hello All,
I have recently been trying to make sense of these vector charts
myself. I have a few questions to those of you who have answered some of
the queries made to the list.
I would like to know which of the "free" viewers that you have (or are)
using. If those of us who are having trouble all get on the same page by
using the same viewer, then maybe we could help each other out.
I have tried the Caris Easy-ENC viewer on the NOAA Inland Rivers charts
and have not figured out a way to turn layers on or off. Also tried the
dkLook one for coastal charts. But then again, I easily miss lots of things:)
Thanks for any help,
Bill Russell

CARIS is for professional chart developers.
I suggest using the viewer offered by FUGAWI.

Bill, I would also recommend that people distinguish between the various
Vector charts available. After all Nobeltec's excellent Passport series of
charts are all Vector. Might be better to confine all the complaints to the
NOAA - ENC vectors, not vectors generally.

I'd agree you need to differentiate flavors of vector charts. I'm using the
NIMA ENC charts with the CAPN Mosaic DNC version and they are very adequate
in all ways.
You do need a fair amount of horsepower in your PC to run vector charts. My
ThinkPad 390X (500 MHZ) struggles, but my ThinkPad A31 (1.6 Ghz) does fine..

I am not the brightest bulb in the computer box but I purchased FUGAWI and
certainly expected to be able to get it to work, even if I didnt stay at a
Holiday Inn Express last night. I called in our computer Maven. We spent
hours trying until I finally got so aggravated that I sent it back. If I
were crude I would make some remark abt. the name and ----fill in the blank.
