Water heater

I replaced my leaky water heater with a Raritan 10 gallon and I am not one
bit happy with it. The engineering is poor in my opinion. First of all, you must
add a check valve and a second expansion tank to your system if you do not
already have those things. My boat did not, and the old water heater worked
perfectly for 10 years. The Raritan unit traps air that cannot be removed, but
must be absorbed over weeks and weeks, even in constant use. If you don't put in
a check valve and expansion tank, you will get hot water backing up into your
cold water for weeks until the trapped air is absorbed by hundreds of gallons
of water passing through. Also, on the 10 galon size, they do not offer an
INCONEL heating element, only copper. The cost difference between them is pennies
to the manufactrer, but to the end user it is a potential problem. With the
copper element, if you run out of water, the heating element is gone. With
Inconel, the element can run "dry" with no harm. I just feel that this product has
engineering that holds customers in contempt. I like many of their other
products a lot, and they have good engineering, but not the water heaters in my
opinion.

I go to Sears and buy a heater for $135.  They last 5 to 7 years.  Probably
would go longer but get unsightly - rust around the bottom and on top so I
usually just replace them.  Had them on the last 2 boats and have had no
problems. I'm sure I am doing something unacceptable though.
