Even though I never got out to see the Rufous Hummingbird in eastern CT I have
been following the tales of it.  I just want to say how great it is the owners
of the home were so gracious to everyone who went to see the bird.  I also want
to say the same to the owners of the home that had the Calliope.  Quite amazing
that it survived for so many months and so deep into winter.  I'm amazed it
survived this long.  I was pulling for it to make it thru winter but I'm not
surprised it wasn't doing well today.  This is January and is often the time
these hummer stragglers finally give in to the freezing temps so it was expected
it would die soon.  As with the disappearance of the Calliope, which I did see,
these little buggers are tough but just can't handle the cold temps of the
northeast.  I hope the rehabilitaters can save it but if they can't it lasted as
long as it could and gave so many people a special treat for all that time.
