I recently had an alternator bracket fail on my 7 year old Onan 8 kw
generator. I called the local Onan dealer and he did not stock the bracket.
Then I called Cummings Atlantic in Richmond and they told me that they did
not stock the bracket in their warehouses but the Onan factory had two in
stock. I asked if they had an expedited shipping program since I wanted to
use the boat later in the week. They said yes, I could have it the next day
for an additional 13%. I am located in Maryland and the parts depot is in
Memphis, Tenn.
I was shocked to find that the part arrived at my house at 10 AM the next
morning. The bracket lists for $7. The total charge including Fedex
shipping was $9.04.
Obviously, Onan lost money on this deal but they really impressed a customer.

Frank,
They could afford to, after selling me parts.
Last year, while on a cruise in the Chesapeake, we snapped the shaft of
the raw water pump on our old 7.5 kw Onan while we were in Oxford. A couple
of days later, when we were in Annapolis I went to the local Onan dealer and
paid $180+ for a rebuilding kit for the pump which consisted of a shaft, 2
bearings, a seal, and an impeller. A new pump was $500+. (It is a belt drive
pedestal mount pump)
Needless to say, I was impressed as well.

The shaft breaks every 500 hours. I'm on my third. Kits around here are a
bit less, but I'm less than impressed...
