Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsAt about 4:30 AM this morning (June 4) the first tar balls and mouse of tar
was first noted on Pensacola beach (from Perdido Pass to Navarre). BP
response was by about 1:30 PM--and there is some problem with who is in
control of the situation. Although there is no official notice of tar in the
passes, if it is on the beaches, it is getting into the passes, and ICW--all
be it in small amounts.
So far Pensacola and Perdido Pass have not been closed. CG says that is a
decision to be made down the line. There will be 17 Bayous and waterways
which will be blocked by country booms. (some by BP, some Country and some
Private). The plan at Pensacola Pass is to make a "V" from Fort Mc Crae and
Ft Pickins--also including the Fort Barrancas area. This could hamper
progress on the water way. The county cannot officially shut down the
waterway--only the CG or Corp of Engineers can do that.
I have several boats. Two are on lifts or davits, another one I took out of
the water yesterday. I don't want to get oil on the boat--despite putting
double booms on our Bayou.
I don't believe that anyone can give you information of what will be happening
a week down the line. You might get through--you might not. Consider that it
is about 250 miles from Carabell to Mobile Bay. I don't know what the plans
are for the Mobile River, but there will be booms over our local rivers on
Perdido Bay. My guess is that you probably will get through. There is a
chance that you may get a small amount of tar on the boat. If that happens,
then you will probably have to clean the boat once you get into waters where
there is no oil.
