Rudder failure while underway.

Today, while underway, my hydraulic ram cylinder separated from the coupling that it is attached to which is attached to the rudder post.

Had the Nav alarm simultaneously with the “thud” from the lazarette.

Tried to jury rig but no dice.

So, while in neutral, banged out the pin holing the coupling to the rudder ram post, screwed the coupling back on to the threads of the hydraulic cylinder ram till about 5 threads were showing, tighten the lock washer nut, and reassembled.

But for the life of me, cannot figure out how the ram unscrewed itself, unless it can slowly rotate when under hydraulic power?

Can anyone give to me a hint?

And, if you have such a unit, is your fully screwed in or are their threads showing?

And this lock nut is kind of thin (original equipment) and by fighting it, I am unloading the threads of the ram and loading the threads of the locking nut.

Is that really what I should be doing?
