getting rid of silicone residue

Last year in a moment of carelessness, I inadvertently used 3M white
silicone sealant to glue a loose canvass snap stud back in place. (The
hole in the glelcoat was too big so I thought I would just glue it back.)
I thought I was using 3M 5200 adhesive. Alas, the snap is loose again due
to my carelessness. Anyway, I assume it is futile to reglue it with 5200
unless or until I can remove the silicone residue.

Any ideas how to remove the residue?

David,

Life Caulk makes a product called RELEASE that I've had OK results with for
removing other unknown sealants.  It claims to work on silicone, but I have
not yet tried it on that application.

Dave, we're not sure of your exact predicament, but will offer this
suggestion.

Drill the hole out, slightly larger than what it is now, maybe 1
or 2 / 64ths larger. This will clean the edges. Then fill with thickened
polyester or epoxy resin. After the resin hardens, redrill to the correct size
for the snap. (There are epoxy putty sticks, plus  a variety of other epoxy
products that can be used to fill the hole.) Bed the snap in the sealant
of your choice, but as you are installing the snap, tighten only enough to get
squeeze out all round. Give it a day or two, then tighten down- this will form
more of a gasket like seal, rather than just a thin layer of sealant. Hope
this helps..
