TWL: Cost of canvas work

Hi everyone!  I've subscribed to this list for months and have learned much,
till now haven't had need to write.  I purchased a 41' President Aft-Cabin
Trawler last Fall.  I need the enclosure on the flybridge completely replaced,
although the metal supports are in good shape.  I also have a hard-top over the
stern-deck.  I'm getting quotes to have the flybridge enclosed, and new side
eisenglass & screens built for the aft deck.

Has anyone had this work completed & would you mind sharing the ranges of costs
with me?  Is there a big difference between going with 30 mil or 40 mil
eisenglass?  Does someone want to share with me the spelling of eisenglass-
clearly it doesn't look right.

Thanks!

isinglass ( ichthyocoll )
A semi-transparent whitish substance consisting of a very pure form of
gelatin, produced from the sounds (swimming bladders) of the sturgeon
(Acipenser huso, and other species of Acipenser), found in the Caspian and
Black Seas. After removal, the bladders are cut open, soaked in water,
spread out and the outer silvery membrane removed by rubbing. The isinglass
contains about 80o collagen. It is used as a clarifying agent, in the
manufacture of fish glue, and as a size for handmade paper. Its use in
recent years has greatly diminished, due to the rise in use of synthetic
materials and gelatin.
isinglass

[I-zuhn-glas; Izing-glas]
Transparent and pure, this form of gelatin comes from the air bladder of
certain fish, especially the sturgeon. It's used as a fining agent to help
clarify wine, although today's modern gelatin (made from beef and veal
bones, cartilage, tendons, etc.) has replaced isinglass in most instances.

The "Surrey with the Fringe on Top"  had isinglass curtains you could roll
right down.
I doubt that your boat does.
Heh heh.
Cheers
Glenn.

While those definitions are in the dictionary, they are outdated and
Isinglass is used in boats all the time, albeit it's a polymer product
now, and not made from fish bladders.

eisenglass (endsnip)

Ed,
We  had our boat done about 14 mnths ago. It is a 43 foot with a hard cover
over the Sundeck, much the same as yours. We also had the frame for the
bridge, but they did a little modifying on it. We got quotes from $5,000 up
to close to $9,000. As it turned out, we were the most impressed with the
workmanship of the $5,000 guy. He did a wonderfull job. They used Sumbrella
and 40 mil. We had him use the Stratoglass for the front panels on the
bridge & the first one down each side, all the ones you look out of while
driving. It has all held up so far. I do like the 40 mil much better than
other boats where I've had the 30 mil. The 40 mil seems to stay "flatter" &
be easier to see out of. We don't have much scratching yet, but we roll a
small towel up in each smiley to keep the zippers off the glass.
