Since Steve Sipe and I have similarly equipped vessels, and he has been so
much help before, this is probably mostly a question for him; but on the
chance there are others with answers, here goes...
At present, I can transfer Coastal Explorer routes and waypoints on my
laptop directly to my elderly Furuno 1920C plotter via a Furuno data cable.
As a quick backup so I don't need the laptop handy, I can also save all such
user data to an SD card inserted into the Furuno.
I am interested to know if there is software supporting transfer of the same
data from the laptop to an SD card for subsequent upload into the Furuno.
When I was Garmin equipped, I could accomplish this feat using their
Homeport software. I know that contrary to the Garmin equipment I head, my
Furuno plotter overwrites all its internal data when uploading from cards
and computers, and I plan to have several SD cards aboard with different
sets of data.

Rich,
I may be mistaken, but I believe that the data written by the Furuno is
proprietary and can't be manipulated or read by anything other than the
Furuno software. I recall a conversation with Furuno support where I
posed the same question to them, and that was basically their response.
Additionally, they said the Furuno PC software ( "MaxSea Time Zero" can
work with the data directly, reading and writing to an SD card that can
in turn be read by the VX2 chartplotter. I believe that Time Zero can
also be connected as a network node on the VX2 network via ethernet
connection. The software lists for $495. I don't have first hand
experience with TimeZero, my knowledge comes from what I researched on
their website.
So your plan to use multiple SD cards may be the most workable solution.
Hope that helps.
