Don's post about wave heights brings up an interesting question.  What
method(s) do folks use to estimate wave heights?

As Don mentions "...

I know that we all tend to think
those seas are bigger than they really are and that in reality we would very
rarely encounter these sort of conditions..."

It would seem prudent to have a reasonably accurate estimate of wave
heights.

Any comments welcomed,

Thanks,

John Blair

An interesting question.  I found this web page instructive regarding
wave propagation and height measurements, despite it's bias towards a
surfer perspective.

It's always been the 'significant seas' part of the measurements that
interest me when I'm afloat.  Although we tend to over estimate, when
you're at the bottom of a trough, knowing how high your cockpit floor is
and adding your own eye height gives some indication on the really big
ones.  If your eyes are 20 foot above the water and the wave is another
10 foot or so above you, perhaps all we need to know is that these are
waves I am going to do all I can to avoid experiencing similar again.

When I cross the Gulfstream in a center console....and I am standing at the
helm ...the deck is about even with the sea.......if I look at the waves and
they are about even with my line of sight....it is 6 ft......if I have to look
up to see the wavetop....I am looking at about 8 to 10 feet........if the wave
is taller than that....I am dead....
