On my '91 46 Grand Banks Classic, I've identified a leak coming from the upper
helm. It's entering along the teak eyebrow joint between the upper fiberglass
and the top of the cabin. It moves from the front along the silicone joint
and pools in an area above the port door, more or less. We had some work
done on the teak a year ago and I think the use of heat gun and poor quality
work contributed to cracking of the seal and the leak here. Now that I've
found this problem, I'm wondering if it is the source of another leak below.
We also have a leak in the same general area of the pooling. There is some
staining in the wall below the window forward and next to the door. In the
last few rainfalls, we've noticed that there is some dripping in the nearby
galley, under the deck. I had identified this leak first a few weeks ago and
thought it was from somewhere in the adjacent teak decking. I was planning on
lifting the teak corner molding along the fiberglass walls above the galley
area to inspect and seal as needed. BTW this area seems to have a wet spot
after other areas of the deck have dried.
We are going to clean, seal and refinish the eyebrow now to eliminate the
upper leak. I'll resilicone the joint when done so this should take care of
the upper problem.
Questions.
Should I do this first and see if it takes care of the lower problem?
What sealant material is recommended for joints between finished teak and the
fiberglass.
What experience do you have with finding leaks in the teak decking over
fiberglass?
Other thoughts or comments appreciated.

Good Morning Jim-
My preference for sealing wood trim, laid over fiberglass, is polysulfide,
such as 3M-101 or lifecaulk. Polysulfides (5200, etc) are too adhesive, making
them a problem when a repair needs to be done. Keep in mind, no sealant is
permanent, and any that come in a cartridge, once applied, has a lifespan of
around 7 years; sometimes more, sometimes less.
I try never to use silicone, unless it is absolutely necessary, such as when
bedding plastics.
Though it is more time consumming, the technique that I found that works best
is to install the trim with more than adequate sealant, screw it down just
until you get sgueeze out all around and wait several days, a week or two, if
possible, then go back and tighten everything up.
Now you have, not just sealant, but also a gasket.
If you immediately screw the trim down tight, you may get enough squeeze out
to starve the joint, and when the sealant shrinks, a void is possible, which
could let water in.
Regardless of which sealant you use, except for the oil-based bedding
compounds, I'd still favor using that technique.
As far as whether to do one first, or both? If they are both leaking, do them
both. If not sure, doing one first and watching the other to see if it is
leaking is okay, except that if it is leaking, you may get more staining than
could otherwise have been avoinded. Besides, why deny yourself the extra fun!

The area at the teak deck to the cabin is all molded glass on our 1991 GB 46.
Ours is a galley down model so the reference point my be different.
The
seam between the flybridge and the eyebrown is difficult to get to and on ours
it varies in width from 1/16" to 3/8" making sealing a challenge. Using
gentle heat and small tools removed all of the caulk and rebedded with
BoatLife. This also required refinishing the teak hatband trim piece as
patience is not my only missing virture. At the eyebrow and along the aft
area of the hardtop-to-cabin the caulk was dried out and brittle. Rebedded
and so far so good. The front of the eyebrow on each side has a vent which
opens to the underside of the flybridge. Its about a 3/4" drain tube/vent.
Found that in a big sea an amazing amout of water will come in the tube as the
spray/green water is forced up under the eyebrow. Found several wire
penetrations under the bridge that were not sealed to the cabin top. This
repair has kept the cabin top dry for last few years.

The site where the water comes in can be far away from where it makes its
appearance on the lower deck - leading to much frustration in trying trace
it down.
A few years ago I started seeing water coming down above the main helm on my
Mainship 34, below and just one foot back from the forward edge of the fly
bridge. It was a frustrating leak to find. Thinking that it may be coming
from the flybridge screws that were right above where the leak was showing
up, I unscrewed, raised and then re-bedded the flybridge, to no avail.
I finally found the water intrusion source several feet back and several
feet to port of where the leak was manifesting itself below. The PO had
removed a screw when he changed out one of the flybridge seats, and had left
the screw hole unfilled. This was under the seat where it was not readily
visible, but just aft of the back edge of the flybridge canvas cover that
channeled rain water right down in front of that screw hole.
Once I repaired the rotted core that had resulted and sealed the hole, there
was no more water coming in below.

new docks with 50 amp service are being installed today. Some of you may also
be members of The CHB Group and we have also invited them to the PARTY!
The berthing at our dock is on a first come basis and will be FREE! We have
worked out a deal with The San Leandro Marina for any one that cannot get in
at our dock for $15.00 a day!
There is also the Marina Inn for people between boats. The Marina also has two
great restaurants as well as two Golf courses and a driving range. Let me know
and we can probably put together some foursomes.
There is a FREE BBQ on Saturday and Happy Hour at the Bar on Friday. Looking
forward to meeting you and putting some faces with the names.

Ahoy,
We are getting closer to the Cruise in and I wanted to update you on some of
the planned functions. On Friday May the 14th there will be a Welcome party in
the Duncans Pub with snacks and a no host bar. Bring a covered dish to share,
there will be prizes for favorites.
Saturday we are planning a 9:00 am Tee Time for the golfers and a nature hike
along the Sea shore park trail for the non-golfers.
The BBQ will start at 1:00 and Spinnaker Y.C. will provide the food and two
drink tickets per person FREE! Please RSVP to me so we can plan the food. We
are looking into a DJ for Saturday night but I need to let the board know how
many people will be coming.
The Club Dock will be on a first come served basis for FREE! Any overflow can
go into the Marina for $15.00 a day. Our dock is new with 50/30 Amp service.
Make sure you stay in the marked channel it has just been dredged to 6ft MLW.
The club stands by channel 16 if you have any questions on your approach. The
Marina also is on 16 and has fuel and pump out available. The Marina Inn has a
special rate for anyone that is not boating in.
We are looking forward to meeting you all and putting some faces to the
