As long as you're mentioning non-intuitive solutions for problems that
newbies would have NEVER thought of, how about rock salt in the bilge
of a wood hull?  Vegetable oil in the head?

What else is there?

Cheyenne pepper?  Even Cayenne Pepper? Desinex? Teflon Spray?

Who's pulling who's leg here?  I'm getting ready to haul out and invest at
least $1200.00 in a bottom job, I don't want to be laughed out of the
boatyard.

I admit to being a bit of a newby here, I have only been boating since the
mid sixties.  Never have I heard of any of this.  Well, maybe a little
about the pepper.  Give me the straight dope here.

Does this stuff really work or am I getting my leg lengthened?

Vegetable oil in the head?

Our live-aboard gang uses Pinesol, the original which contains a bit
of pine oil (lubricates head parts), smells good and disinfects.

Yes...

<insert tongue in cheek>

I'd vote the pepper works, the vegetable oil works and the teflon spray
works...sometimes...maybe...

The Desitin may cause you to walk with a list...      ;-)

Tilting the Honda outboard completely out of the water, works great on my
little mini-trawler.  Good thinking with that design Ted Brewer.  Don't get
a bit of growth on the drive system.

Now if only Cummins and Lehman and Cat etc...made very big very long
shaft
outboard diesels for the real trawlers, you guys wouldn't be walking
around the boat yards with funny stuff on your hands, and sheepish looks on
your face.    :-)

So that's why the Thais have those long-tailed boats!  I never could figure
that out.

It has to do with the critters that cause rot.  Fresh water rot critters are
much worse than salt water rot critters.  So one makes the water inside and
outside of the boat both salt water.  Of course, there is some tongue-in-cheek
and some truth in this statement.

I think there is more to this than you think. Many have observed that wooden
boats in which the condensate from air conditioners leaks into the bilge are
far more prone to developing punky ribs and planks.
