cell modem

I am communicating with you now with my laptop and a cell modem.

The cell phone is a Qualcomm digital, service through Bell Atlantic, digital
one rate so that I don't worry about connect time (just pay for it - don't
worry about it) to my ISP, who is also BA, with only a local number.

Even though i have a pocketful of cellular PCMCIA modems, I had to buy a
Qualcomm modem to communicate with the Qualcomm phone.

The very frustrating problem that I encountered was the (undocmented) PCMCIA
power management scheme implemented by Win 98 which turns off the modem just
when you go to use it.  Qualcomm customer support directed me to an AOL
website where i downloaded a shareware utility called cardpwr.exe which
turns off the power management (cell modems apparently do their own).

Unfortunately, the first couple of times I tried it, it worked the first
time and didn't the second.  Reconnecting involved running the power
management turnoff again and rebooting (and sometimes reinstalling the
modem.

This time, I was carteful to let the software hang up the phone, obey all
instructions, and basicaly behave myself.  If you get this message, it'll
mean that it worked.
