Re: T&T: The twin/single engine answer

Well, Rich, our next boat will be twins. I  am told a single with a bow
thruster is theoretically as easy to maneuver as a twin, but best I can
tell, maneuvering with twins and a thruster is the optimal option. That
is what we have our eye on. So let the twins/single debate recommence.

I think I have AN answer to the eternal discussion of the benefits
of a
single engine/propeller installation versus a twin engine/propeller
installation in boats.  It involves answering a question about your
past
boating experiences:

Have you ever lost an engine/propeller and then been unable to avoid
an
ensuing disaster (a relative term)?

If no, you have the right number of engines, and you will defend
your answer
to the death.

Note, this depends on your PAST experience, NOT upon what MIGHT
happen in
the future, and such things as past prudent maintenance and
seamanship and
luck are thus covered.

If you are a worry-wart concerned about what might happen in the
future,
well, that's a whole nuther can o' worms, and you will be swayed to
the
twins or redouble you efforts to prevent or mitigate trouble.

Or, you could stick with the single engine and use a bow and stern thruster.

Oh hell, get a twin engine boat with a bow thruster AND a stern thruster.
Heck, get twin bow thrusters and stern thrusters. Just in case, ya know.

I got onboard one of the Coast Guard's new 45' Response Boat, Medium (RB-M).
It's propelled by two large diesel jets - no props.  The Coxswain explained
to me that he can put in docking mode, put one ahead and one back and the
boat will move sideways.  Especially handy when you have a disabled boat in
side tow.
