Do we have a lubrication engineer on the list? I have a question regarding the
use of multi viscosity oils.

I run a Lehman SP135 in my boat and initially used SAE 30 weight diesel oil
per the manual. Some years later (about 2000 hours) I switched to Rotella-T 40
weight per Bob Smiths recommendation. Engine hours are approaching 3000 and
all is well. I'm now finding Rotella-T straight weight SAE 40 oil hard to find
in my area. Can I use Rotella 15W40 which is easy to get at Wal-Mart? Or would
it be better to stay with the single weight and drop back to SAE 30.

Cheers,

PS, Fuel at Baltimore Yacht Club just jumped from about $2.70 to $3.20 one
hour before I reached the fuel dock.

I was told by American Diesel that the Multi Oils may damage the seals, thus
they didn't recommend them

I am not an expert at all but I run my John Deere 6068 with 15W40 for 5000h
now.  It is true I am living way up north and have late fall starting at
around 350F.

The Deere have not glow plug or block heater but it start on 1/4 turn.

At one point, Alex told us that we could not go wrong with 15W40. My 1984
Perkins 6354 manual tells me to use 30W. FWIW, COSTCO sells Rotella 30W by
the case - 6 gallons to the case. I was just there.

I did just like you, but switched to Chevron Delo 400 straight 40 weight
because it's easier to find and (IMHO) just as good.

We've put over 2000 hrs on our 1985 Perkins T6354's in the six years we've
had Heart of Gold and have always run Rotella 15W40.  She's got just over
3000 hrs on her now and things are great (except for this pesky antifreeze
thing).  I get it at Sams Club for around $35.00 per 6-gal case.  Perfect.
3-gal per engine.

I'm coming up on 8,000 hours on my Lehmans and I use either straight 30 wt
or Rotella 15W40.  Bob Smith is a straight weight fan, but I used Rotella
15w40 in the northeast because I was out late and in early.

                                      Regards....
