Artist Trust AWARDS $135,000 TO 18 WASHINGTON STATE ARTISTS
We are delighted to announce the recipients of the 2011 Irving and Yvonne Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, 2011 Fellowships, and the 2011 Claire Short Ireland Residency. Selected by independent panelists, these 18 awards total $135,000 in support to individual artists.
In 1988, two years after its founding, Artist Trust began providing support to artists of Washington State through cash grants. Grants provide artists with a means to continue exploring their creative paths, and in so doing, enrich all of our lives.
The wellspring of creativity is full of new ideas and vitality, as demonstrated by this year's recipients. We can
expect great things to ripple outward, throughout the state, and beyond, thanks in large part to our
funding partners who provided the necessary pipeline of support. --Fidelma McGinn, Executive Director
The Irving and Yvonne Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement awards $10,000 to a Washington State female visual artist, age 60 or over, who has dedicated 25 or more years of her life to creating art. The award, created in 2001 through a generous gift to the Artist Trust Endowment by Irving and Yvonne Humber, recognizes creative excellence, professional accomplishment and dedication to the visual arts. This year 39 applications were received for this award. It is an honor to recognize Barbara Noah as the 2011 Twining Humber Award recipient.
Artist Trust Fellowships recognize Washington State artists of exceptional talent, demonstrated ability, professional achievement and continuing dedication to an artistic discipline. Fellowship recipients receive a cash award of $7,500. This year 409 Fellowship applications from artists working in Emerging & Cross-Disciplinary Arts, Folk & Traditional Arts, Performing Art and Visual Art from around the state were received. The 2011 Recipients are: Emerging & Cross-Disciplinary - Susan Robb, Brent Watanabe, Folk & Traditional - Pete Peterson, Sr., Nadia Tarnawsky, Performing - Hengda Li, Curtis Taylor, Visual - James Allen, Saul Becker, Dan Corson, Tatiana Garmendia, John Grade, Eva Isaksen, Zhi Lin, Jill Mayberg, Anne Drew Potter, Matthew Williams.
Created through the generosity of donors Emer Dooley and Rob Short, the Claire Short Ireland Residency provides a one-month stay in West Cork, Ireland plus a $5,000 award to one Fellowship finalist. The 2011 recipient of the award is Seattle painter Marc Bohne.

As a recipient of this award, I feel the work that I have been doing for the past 20 years has been validated. Aside from the award providing financial support, it also offers recognition for the quality of the work I have done. It is a great honor for me.
-Nadia Tarnawsky, Folk & Traditional Arts
This kind of support is what allows me to pursue the work I understand to be most valuable on a public level and not to be limited to producing commercially viable work. It supports the role of the artist as a public servant, which is what I would like to be, rather than as a producer of luxury goods.
-Anne Drew Potter, Visual Art
Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization whose sole mission is to support and encourage individual artists working in all disciplines in order to enrich community life throughout Washington State. Find out more at www.artisttrust.orghttp://www.artisttrust.org/.
