Less than two weeks ago, Sterling Kennedy traversed Lake Okeechobee from west
to east on a trawler of about the same size and draft (Morgan 36) and since
then, there have been heavy rains in south Florida. Kennedy had no problem
with the exception of dragging thru mud near one lock entrance.

You should be able to cross the lake with no trouble now with existing water
levels. Check with the COE. The savings in time and fuel will be very
substantial.

The other advice with respect to night running from Canaveral to Stuart is
most accurate. It is actually very easy to navigate the ICW at night, and more
pleasant, and cooler, than during the day. You do not need radar or night
vision binocs. Just make sure you have a plotter or computer with current
charts. Pay attention to the light aids and stay in the channel. We have
cruised this section at night and always felt comfortable.

Don't cross the lake at night! Do make a night crossing from the west coast to
the panhandle when you are ready. I was out on the Gulf last weekend and there
seems to be far fewer crab traps to avoid now as a result of higher fuel
prices. Good luck!  Martin Veiner

Lake Okeechobee has fallen in spite of the rains (see current depth from
corps below). I crossed May 13th with the listed controlling depth at 3.93'
in a 2'10' draft boat and dragged 200yds. thru muck at Port Mayaca Lock.
Will not try it in my boat any less that that.

Good luck, rumor is that they may close it for navigation unless levels
increase (tropical storms etc.) as the farmers are withdrawing allot of
water for irrigation.
