Wednesday, March 04, 2009 6:00:46 PM
Location: Samana
Latitude is 19 degrees 11.909 minutes north.
Longitude is 69 degrees 19.85 minutes west.

Current passage average speed = 0.00, distance = 0.00, duration = 0.00 days
0.00 hours 0.00 minutes.

This weather observation was at Wednesday, March 04, 2009 5:42:36 PM local
time.
Observation location: Samana.
Latitude is 0 degrees 0 minutes north.
Longitude is 0 degrees 0 minutes west.
The air temperature is 70,  and water temperature is 0 degrees fahrenheit.
The forecast is Rain.
The current weather is rain.
The sky is overcast (more than 90% clouds).
The wind is 10 knots from the north.
The visibility is 2 nautical miles.
The wave height is 0 feet with 0 foot swells.
The barometer is 1021 millibars and steady.

Well, I'm just not used to this. It was cloudy with showers all

day, and now it RAINING!  Boy this sucks.  And its only 70 degrees out.  I
just turned on the heater.  Nicholas is trying to scare up a game with his
Chipmunk toy and I'm nuking some of my frozen chili.  It's a chili kind of
night.

I took Nicholas out for a walk this morning. The usual dock at the

town was jammed with tour boats being cleanded (since there were no
customers), so I took him over to the park island on the other side.  I
broke out my rain coat and we went.  He came back soaked and happy.  He ran
around in the rain like a maniac.  He doesn't get of the leash in town.
But, he was also a mud pie.  So, he got a shampoo when we got back to the
boat.

Today was also a laundry kind of day, so we fired up a load while

the genset and watermaker were running.  Then we did email, clean up the
boat, etc. kind of projects.  Then I tackled an optional project. I wanted
to hook up the 12db WiFi antenna that has been frying my WiFi box and see if
it really made a difference.  So, I pulled out the SSB radio to get access
to it and hooked up the box.  YUP.  Went from a signal strength of 41 to 56.
That was good enough for me.  However when I tried to use the existing
internet wire it didn't work.  After replacing the ends a few times
(grrrrr), I ran a new wire.  Voila, stronger internet.  I can see maybe 20
access points now, where before I could only see about 6.  The strongest
one, free complements of the DR Telco, will do.  Maybe now Skype will work a
little better.

So, now the clallenge is how to keep the 12db antenna from frying

the box again when I talk / email on the radios.  One answer is to pull the
SSB down and unhook the box whenever I make the transition from house boat
to trawler.  That's a tiresome option.  Another answer is to put a longer
cable on the antenna and bring the box out of the overhead compartment.
But, that means loss of signal and I can't have that.  So, my plan is to
slip a metal tube over the antenna before using any of the radios.  That's
the plan. Tomorrow, hopefully it will be dry enough to get on land, I'll go
to the local ferriteria (hardware store) and find just the piece.  Then I'll
slip it over and see if all my signal strength goes to zero.  If so, I think
I'm good to go.

No sign of the other boaters today. Just too nasty. I am so glad

to be in a trawler.  At least I have windows and some view on the world.

Well, the timer on the microwave just dinged, calling me to action.

Where's summer up here???
