Flag Cover

My American flag on the stern whips during the night when it is windy making a
racket in the aft cabin. Sure I could bring it in but in this part of the
world it is often wet. Does anybody know a source for a flag/flag pole cover?
I'd also like a small cover for my bow burgee. They certainly would be easy
enough to make if only I could sow!

Gary,
For my burgee on the bow, I use an old sock, choose whatever color looks
appropriate.  For the larger flag aft, you could use one sock with the toe
cut off, and one whole sock at the top.  It will look fine from 10 yards
away.

A friend on the dock a few boats away from us made flag "condoms" for
both the burgee and the US flag. It is apparently easy enough to do if
you have the Sunbrella or the other material from which you want them
made and a heavy-duty sewing machine. I couldn't do it myself because I
don't have the sewing machine, but in any marina there are usually a few
people who have them. I had them made with a tie at the bottom in order
to keep them in place.

We always cover the flag and burgee when at the dock (in Florida) to
protect them from the sun; otherwise they don't last very long. Using
the covers is much easier than removing the burgee and flag from the staff.

One idea, if you have a golf shop near, is to get one of those big umbrellas that come with a cover. You'll probably never need the cover for your umbrella really, so just just it for the flag. Should be covered or illuminated at night anyway...
