Both of these bearing have a collar that is held on to the shaft with set
screws. How does this type of a set-up allow fore and aft movement or
isn't there enough to worry about?
Kathy K also has an intermediate bearing in the bilge. Originally it was a
ball bearing which the inner race clamped to the shaft with a collect. The
local fellow who has done a lot of shaft work on fishboats suggested that I
replace the ball bearing with a babbit pillow block bearing which has two
split halves. The babbit bearing allows fore and ant shaft movement and
can be replaced without removing the shaft.
Some fore and aft shaft movement occurs when shifting between forward and
reverse.
