Communication on board

Hi all,

I am a list lurker who likes to seek multiple use from whatever items &
technology is available.

The category that I was currently mulling over at present is communications.

I am NO EXPERT in this area !!!.......just digging for comms information.

I wish to know if you can use the Bluetooth headsets, now in relatively
common use on mobile phones as a comms setup on board?

The logic path to this query from me is;

  1. The Bluetooth technology seems to be stable and readily available,
(yes... ebay has multitudes for as low as $10)

  2. If you already have a headset for use with a mobile phone or music
source, can it be also be employed for use in on board comms?

  3. The right type of ear pieces (small earphone style) could be worn inside
Ear muffs when in more noisy situations (engine room).

  4. I understand that using mobile phones may not be the answer due to cost
    or connectivity issues.

Is there a simple way to communicate between two (or more) Bluetooth
headsets/earphones ?

Is this available already in gadget land?

I understand that there needs to be a device to connect the sets. Could this
be achieved using an existing computer ( for those using them on board)?

Is there a simple, cheap, stand alone electronics kit that could be adapted
to do this?

Does Bluetooth connectivity pick up interference from other devices easily?

Can Bluetooth connectivity cause interference to other devices on board ?

Would this be any easier than the  radio comms available at present?
