Hockey Puck GPS

I am going to download Sea Clear (free) and some NOAA charts (also free) to
my home desktop so that I can get familiar with how it all works (I am
used to  Offshore Navigator). Then I am going to do all this again on a new
laptop for  the boat.

What is the latest and greatest and almost free hockey puck GPS? Where do
you buy them?

I'll use this GPS to let the desktop find it and get acquainted before I
use it on the new laptop. Laptops are not free but they are getting down
there  in price.

Thanks

i don't think any of them are the greatest...  the most important thing to
consider is your operating system.  If you have or will have Vista, then
make sure the unit comes with vista driver;  I have a delorme LT20 which
works fine on my older laptop under XP, unfortunately Delorme hasn't
released any vista driver... so it's now collecting dust somewhere...

If your laptop has bluetooth, i 'd recommend a BT GPS. I got G-sat BT386
which works very well.  it's rechargeable (via USB or 120v adapter) , last
about 10 hours or can be powered by either souce. Works prefectly with
SeaclearII and OpenCPN (which i prefer to Seaclear), as well as goops to
upload live tracking.  Easy to set up.

with a Bluetooth GPS, i'd recommend donwloading Franson GPSgate, only $12
and allows you to share the signal between two programs; for some reason,
it also seems to increase BT reliability

as a bonus, you can use the GPS with most cel phone and link it to google
maps.

'Lo All,

On an older thread..... I asked DeLorme if the LT20 would work on my
64-bit laptop which uses Vista Home Premium as the operating system.
They said it would, so ordered one - the $19.95 (?) one that was
pointed out in the thread - and received it the other day. Tried it
out and it works perfectly on my laptop, using their Street Atlas USA
(a rather clunky program). It even displayed elevation (3D) about
right. I did have to get it totally clear of trees or any other
intervening obstructions. Out on the dock, it locked onto 11
satellites (I think it was).

Later, I installed Sea Clear, but have not tried it yet with the
LT20. If memory serves correctly, there was a discussion some time
ago about getting Sea Clear to recognize a DeLorme GPS - and most
importantly - how to configure Sea Clear to do so. IF there was a
thread on this, could someone kindly tell me the approximate
date/author so I can find it in the archives (or send me the info)?
Thanks in advance.

Take care and be safe.

when i upgraded my laptop to an HP touchsreen running vista 64, i coudlnt'
find a way to get the LT20 to work with either SeaClear, OpenCPN or Goops.

searching the delorme website confirmed that their driver (Serial emulator)
will not work on 64b. machines.  makes them useless on boats...

I got a Bluetooth GPS instead, works great, with my laptop and google maps
on my Win Mobile phone.
