When fueling up at home, depending on where you berth your boat and what
the local EPA regulations are, you may be able to have your local heating
oil dealer come by and bring you "off-road diesel". In New Jersey, they
add a red dye to indicate that road tax has not been paid and this fuel is
to be used in boats or generators or construction machinery. this is #2
diesel, correct for marine engines. In NJ this fuel costs about $
2.50/gallon. Sure beats paying 3+ bucks at a marina.
Spend a few minutes with your local yellow-pages, ya might be pleasantly
surprised.

Somewhere I have read that "dyed" diesel fuel in your
tanks can get you BIG fines if you go to certain states.
I seem to remember that this may be in Illinois or Michigan.
Even if it's "okay" where you live, you may end up in BIG
and EXPENSIVE trouble if you travel to other areas.
Again, this is from an admittedly decreasing memory.

Sounds odd, it's the same stuff that marinas put in your boat.
On my recent trip thru New York State, as I recall, their marina diesel was
pink also.
Then again, I know that some states have always harrassed truck drivers,
forcing them to buy gas in every state they travel through... very wierd.

Somewhere I have read that "dyed" diesel fuel in your

I seem to remember that this may be in Illinois or Michigan.
I can't imagine that this can possible be true, because I've bought diesel
around the coast from New York to Texas and the only place I remember and of
it NOT being dyed was a dock in Key West, I think it was, that has a
"premium" diesel that was the clear, or "undyed" type, but I didn't buy it
there either.
I do have a friend that has a dozer service, as well as several diesel
trucks and he said that if he put even a minute amount of dyed stuff in a
truck tank, they could detect it for a long, long, time with severe
penalties. He doesn't do it.
