Dear HBCU Library Alliance Partners,

I hope you are doing well. We are excited to invite you to participate in a collaborative endeavor to enhance our commitment to the development and growth of HBCU students. The HBCU Library Alliance, in collaboration with Brown University Library, is embarking on a mission to create a "Best Practices Guide for Hiring Students."

Brown University Library has been awarded a $246,000 Implementation Grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. Advancing HBCU Scholarship, Diversifying Digital Publishinghttps://hbculibraries.org/docs/HBCU-Brown.pdf is a three-year cross-organizational training and support program for HBCU library professionals interested in developing open-access born-digital scholarship. This initiative seeks to address the need for more diversity in digital publishing and advance HBCU scholarship by providing specialized training to three librarians from Fisk University (TN), Kentucky State University, and Prairie View A&M University (TX). This initiative will provide students with valuable experiences and training while fostering an environment of support and mentorship.

Project Overview: The "Best Practices Guide for Hiring Students" will serve as a comprehensive resource for best practices in hiring HBCU students. It will cover topics such as intern/fellow task lists, training for research students transitioning to digital scholarship projects, and the most significant needs of hiring students for projects commencing in specific semesters.

Docs of interest to include in the "Best Practices Guide for Hiring Students":

  • Student Project Plan
  • Student Selection Criteria and Forms
  • Student Evaluation and Feedback Surveys
  • Progress Reports
  • Resource Allocation Records
  • Legal and Ethical Documents, including legal agreements, consent forms, or ethical guidelines, that are relevant to digital projects, especially if students are working on research or publications.
  • Training Materials

This guide will enrich the experiences of our students participating in the Advancing HBCU Scholarship Diversifying Digital Publishing project and contribute to the broader academic and professional community. Your active participation and input are invaluable for creating a robust Best Practices Guide that will benefit HBCU partners for years.
