One method I have seen is illustrated on the Zimmerman Marine on-line
maintenance series.

If you sign up for the series, watch the video called Deck and Cabin
Structural Issues. It details how to repair spongy decks.

Subject: T&T: Bulkhead Rotten.. how to fix?

I just found out my bulkhead in my trawler is rotten on the top due to years
of water intrusion. One side is in pretty bad shape, the other side is in not
so good shape. Im wondering a few things:

  1. Best way to fix.. Would this be total removal and replacement? If so..
any tips, tricks, hints, advice wouldbe welcomed. I think this would be a huge
    job.
  2. Would the chemical products that are designed for specifically this be a
viable solution.. or are those products really not so good? (note.. I can put
my finger through the bulkhead in at least one place if I try I think....)
  3. Is it safe to use my trawler? I have three bulkheads and the one that is
affected is the aft most bulkhead.  The top 2 feet or so on the one side is
rotten for about a length of maybe 2 ft.
Anyone who has been through this or knows about this, I would love to hear
    comments.
    Thanks
    John
