Official Counter: Todd Pepper
Observers: Chuck Sharbaugh, Jeremy Hatt
Visitors:
Chuck Sharbaugh spent most of the day suffering the lack of raptors with
me.
Weather:
Cloudy all day, althought the sun did peek out a couple times. The
temperature ranged from 1.1C to 0 3.5C. Barometric pressure was steady.
Winds had mostly a western component, seeming to shift regularly from SW to
WSW and until the last hour never more than 5 km/hr
Raptor Observations:
A very slow day with only 5 raptors of 4 species. Four of the 5 birds all
came within 15 minutes of each other, on exactly the same flight line
shortly after 12 noon.
Non-raptor Observations:
A modest migration of song birds in the first couple hours of the count
including: 36 Eastern Bluebird; 1 Chipping Sparrow; 160 Red-winged
Blackbird; 13 Pine Siskin; and, 56 American Goldfinch. In the non-passerine
category there were 37 Tundra Swan. The Big Creek Marsh still has 9 Mute
Swans and various numbers of Gadwall, Am. Wigeon, Am. Black Duck, Mallard,
Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal and Ruddy Ducks.
Predictions:
The forecast is for mainly sunny conditions in the a.m. and clouding up in
the p.m. with temperatures from -3C to +2C. Winds are forecasted in the 10
km/hr range all day out of the north-west in the a.m. and the west in the
p.m.
