Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI love you "guys". A week or so ago I tried to ask a simple question in
trying to compare diesel trawlers with a diesel sailboat (shoal draft and
displacement hull) with the standing rigging removed. Yet, this somehow turned
into a heated discussion concerning the MacGregor 26. Whoa ... how did that
happen? The 26' Mac is not even on my very long list of boats to consider.
So, I ask, again, in an attempt to redirect the conversation back onto it's
intended course. Can we have a conversation about the possibilities of
taking a sailboat (shoal draft, diesel engine, displacement hull ... like
Catalina, Hunter, Pearson, etc.), removing all the standing rigging and treating it
as a diesel trawler when cruising the canals of NY and Canada and the ICW?
Huh ... can we?
Oh and for you 34' Mainship advocates ... I have looked but have been unable
to find one without delaminated decks and an engine worth talking about
within my price range. I appreciate those comments and continue to look.

Greg I don't think this is a spin off of your original post....
Sorry Greg, your correct, this is a spin off of your original post.
Here's a short article on the subject that may be of some help.

The writer makes mention of another article publihed earlier on converting
sailboats.
