Verizon air card

I am going to buy a Verizon Air Card for use with my laptop on the boat.

I was talking briefly with a gentleman who was using a Verizon air card with his laptop.  He said his came with a pigtail that lets the card plug into 2 USB ports on the same computer and greatly increases it's speed.  (USB port speed limited?)

I asked a guy at the local Verizon store and he knew nothing about that.  He said the card doesn't come with any pigtail.  Anyone on the list know if the above is true?

The card he is referring to is the USB720.  It comes with a pigtail about 3'
long and has two USB connectors.  One is for the the normal connection and
the other picks up the +5v feed to increase power to the unit.  I have this
and it has worked well but I can't honestly say that I can determine that
the speed increases with both USB plugs installed.  The unit can also be
used without the pigtail.

Larry:

I am currently using a Verizon Aircard with the so called pigtail. The pigtail allows you to plug in to two USB ports and double the electrical power from one port.

It doesn't help much, but in marginal areas, like Oriental, NC where I am currently anchored it does help. In almost every other area in Florida, Ga and SC where I have been this year, I just plug the Aircard in to one port.

If you go in to the Verizon webpages and carefully look and read about the available aircards you will probably find the one I bought about 5 months ago. It is the size of a chewing gum pack when the usb port is folded up.

The guy at the local Verizon store doesn't know his company's products. I would buy it on line.

I use a Verizon though not off the dock and its fast and simple. In fact I'm
going to get rid of my cable service and my Air Port (Mac user) and use only
my Verizon (the chewing gum size thing - no pigtails). Using this will save
me the cost of the cable service at home and I find the Verizon to be as
fast, most of the time. I'm sold on the thing.

When I looked at the two cards available I found that the one with two USB
ports used one to power an amplifier as others have noted. If you look at
that card VERY closely, you will find a small rubber plug. If you remove it
with a fingernail or similar you will find that it is a port for an external
antenna! Right, the Verizon store saleswoman had no idea it existed. I have
no recollection of the type of connector required, but this should further
increase signal strength in a fixed installation aboard.

Yes, you need two pieces. One is the antenna itself, which has two
suction cups on it, and the other is an adapter pigtail that fits the
connector you found. However, I am told it does not buy you much. I
am still looking for something better -- at one time the Active
Captain website was selling an amplification device but not now, so I
assume it did not work as they hoped.

I am still looking for something better -- at one time the Active
Captain website was selling an amplification device but not now, so
I assume it did not work as they hoped.

Actually, it works great.  We wouldn't have suggested it unless we
tested it extensively and knew that it was a good product.  You can
still buy it in many other places.  We see our job as finding new
technologies for mobile phones and mobile internet and helping willing
companies to make their products even better for boating use.

For the last 4 months, we've been working with the Cell Ranger
manufacturer to create a new version that is better for boats.  I've
been testing the newest version for a couple of weeks and it's great.
There needs to be some better mounting options for the antenna but
that'll be worked out.  I'd also like to try it on the water in known
problem areas.  All of that will happen soon.

The new antenna is a brand new design.  It's designed to work at all
angles of tilt without losing any amplification.  It's also much more
resistant to the effects of salt spray.  I'd hope to see the
manufacturer making it available by Summer.  Karen and I are giving
some talks at upcoming MTOA and TrawlerFest meetings/rendezvous and
will most certainly be making demonstrations of these new devices.
