Re: T&T: Sunk boats, replace all wiring and systems?

A friend of mine here in Tortola is in the salvage business and has
salvaged quite a few boats that have been fully submerged for varying
periods of time.  Regardless of the time immersed, all wiring,
electrical, any mechanical that has fast moving parts or bearings and
all wood will have to be replaced.  In some very isolated cases has the
interior wood been usable, due to its being sealed from original.
Obviously all upholstery is trash.  Even when the engines have been
pickled immediately and completely stripped down within a short period
of time, the eventual buyer will have issues down the road.

I bought a Northern Lights 5kw gen set that had been "barely" submerged
on the local NL service manager's own boat and rebuilt by him in their
shop.  Ran well, but had corrosion issues and the manifolds failed
prematurely, as did the water pumps and a few other items.  I got it
for $3000.00, used it for four years, sold it for $3000.00 and probably
netted $1500.00 after all the parts I had to replace.
