Why Hypnosis Works, a Psychological Research Project:
Years ago, as a psychology graduate student, Amanda Barnier, PhD, conducted
a pair of experiments on human behavior and motivation. She distributed a
stack of stamped postcards and asked participants in Group One to mail one
each day for several months. They agreed to help as a favor, while
another received a posthypnotic suggestion while hypnotized to mail the
cards.
Both groups followed through and mailed their cards day after day. Yet, the
reasons behind their actions differed significantly. Those asked for a
favor felt they made a *conscious *decision or choice to comply, while the
hypnotized participants experienced a compelling subconscious urge to
send the cards, like a compulsion that had to be fulfilled. This finding
fascinated Barnier, now a professor of cognitive science, leading her to
delve deeper into the power of hypnosis and its value to change thoughts,
behavior, and feelings. Have you ever felt compelled to do something? That
is exactly what hypnosis does to help you. In short, *hypnosis makes it
easier to do what you want to do and for maximum performance. *
People can develop a subconscious compulsion for unhealthy or healthy
habits. Hypnosis is an amazing skill anyone can use for personal power,
self-discipline, and self-mastery. The power of hypnosis and self-hypnosis
lies in the power of the subconscious mind. Concentration of the mind on
certain ideas in hypnosis can create healthy compulsions to help people
to address problems with sweets, unhealthy foods, emotional eating, nail
biting, insomnia, stress and anxiety, fears, pain, procrastination, lack of
motivation, smoking, gambling, cussing, anger, substance abuse, negative
self-talk, low self-esteem, alcohol and much more. You can replace the
unhealthy compulsions with healthy moderated compulsions and positivity
thinking.
Hypnosis Misunderstood …
In the 1950’s, some medical doctors practised hypnosis quietly under the
threat of loss of their medical license. In the late 1960’s, when I was a
psychology student at the University of Manitoba, a professor said to me:
“You will never get into graduate school if you continue practising
hypnosis.” Another professor and clinical psychologist, Dr. Morgan Wright
said to me: “I don’t know much about hypnosis, but I am with you if you
want to do a pre-master’s research project on hypnosis and smoking.” At the
time, my hypnosis work was really 50 years ahead of public acceptance.
Why is Hypnosis So Popular Today?
- Increased Awareness and Acceptance: As our understanding of
psychology and neuroscience has advanced, there is greater recognition of
the potential benefits of hypnosis for various purposes, including stress
reduction, to change behavior, and pain management. The fears,
misconceptions and stigma surrounding hypnosis has decreased, leading more
people to explore it as a therapeutic modality. Hundreds of thousands of
physicians, psychologists and other healing professionals utilize hypnosis
and hypnotherapy in their practise today.
- Growing Demand for Alternative Therapies: With the rise of the
interest in wellness and holistic health practices, complimentary and
alternative therapies, there is a growing demand for non-pharmacological
approaches to health and wellness. Hypnosis offers a natural, drug-free
method for addressing a wide range of issues, from anxiety and phobias to
smoking cessation and weight loss.
- Accessibility of Training and Resources: The internet has made
information and resources on hypnosis more accessible than ever before.
Online courses, books, and videos allow individuals to learn about hypnosis
and develop their skills from the comfort of their own homes. This
increased accessibility has democratized the practice of hypnosis and made
it more widespread.
- Stress and Mental Health Challenges: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to
heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty for many people
around the world. In times of crisis, there is often increased interest in
coping mechanisms and mental health support. Hypnosis offers a gentle,
effective, and inexpensive way to manage stress, improve resilience, and
promote mental well-being.
- Extensive experimental and clinical research in fields such as
Psychology have produced solid evidence that hypnosis can help us to have a
better, healthier, happier, and more successful life. Whatever you want to
do, hypnosis will likely make it easier and more successful. As research
continues to explore the mechanisms and potential applications of hypnosis,
its popularity is likely to continue to grow in the years to come.
