I hauled my trawler from the Texas gulf to Oklahoma. It is 58 feet LOA, 16
foot beam, about 50,000 lbs empty, loaded out to 14 feet high on the trailer,
with the top of the pilothouse removed. The quotes I got were around $14,000.
I figured I would have to have it moved back at about the same amount so I
bought my own truck and trailer, a Freightliner and 56 foot yacht tranporter.
I put farm tags on it (I own a farm) and just drove it down there, loaded the
boat and drove back. The weight was a problem, 90k is the limit for otr rigs,
and I was about 120k, but farmers can haul about anything and are mostly
exempt from DOT regs. The width was not a big deal, I just got in the middle of
I45 and drove, cars just went around me. Heigth will be your biggest problem.
14 feet is easy, anything over 16 feet will be a major pain and way more
expensive. Where you are moving it from and where it's going also factor in to
the price tag. I can recommend Joe with Anchors Away as the best.
Bob,
Hope you took no offense to my previous post.
Jim, I used a guy named Jerry Hudson(I don't remember the name of his company). He gave me a great price and his credentials all checked out. He was also very easy to deal with and provided an absolutely no hassle experience. I paid $4200 from LI, NY to Houston Texas(30x11x10000lbsx8ft tall....a Mainship Pilot).
Another issue is if you google search or use people off of Yachtworld, most of the time you will be getting ahold of a broker. They are a pain in the azz to deal with and it requires a lot of calls and calling back not to mention they are gonna take their cut so your price will not be as good. Try to deal directly with the transport company.
Anyway, Jerry Hudson's phone number is 410 378 2676. That is his home and you might get his wife on the line. His cell is 410 322 2176.
Good luck and trawler on,
John
