CEF Meeting this Friday and Beyond

Hello again —

First, I’m happy you confirm again that Judy Mortrude from CLASP will be taking over as our policy chair for this year, with some TBD support from ProLiteracy.

Since Judy is moving here to D.C. this month (yay), she has agreed to represent NCL at CEF Friday meetings going forward when I can’t be there (or even when I can be there, if she wants). In addition, if other members of the board would ever like to attend, let me know. It would be good to have other people involved.

Speaking of which: This Friday, December 18 from 9 AM to Noon is the CEF annual meeting, at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on 1200 New York Avenue, NW, from 9am-11:50am. At this meeting the goal is to have as many CEF members as possible be represented in person, because we will be voting on the slate of candidates for officers and board members, approving the CEF 2016 budget and voting on bylaws changes. Unfortunately neither myself nor Judy can attend in person on Friday. (I may try to call in.)

If you are interested in attending and representing NCL on Friday, let me know. I can brief you on the stuff that is being voted on (and don’t worry, the vast majority of people who come do not prepare ahead of time). In addition to the organizational stuff, members of the President’s education policy and budget team will be there for a short panel presentation and Q&A.

Incidentally, I was selected by the nominations committee this year to go on the slate as Treasurer of the organization in 2016. I volunteered for this because I thought it was the best way for me to help with the transition when Joel Packer, CEF’s current ED, retires in March. And, for a number of reasons, I think it's a good idea for an “outlier” person — someone not in K12 or higher ed —  to be in a leadership role on that board during the transition.

Jeff
