There are two materials used that are similar to what you describe. The
first is Weblon, which is rather heavy, but strong. The newest product is
called Stamoid and is a product of the Forbo Corporation, which has its US
headquarters in New Jersey. Stamoid is available in two weights, the lighter
being coated on just one side and the heavier being coated on both sides.I
think they normally recommend the heavier weight for biminis. It is very
strong while being rather light in weight. It comes in about a dozen solid
colors. Most marine custom canvas shops are familiar with it. I think you
may even find a web site using the name Stamoid.
We noticed quite a few biminis at the Miami Boat Show done with this
material and it is beautiful as well as very waterproof. We are having
biminis made of Stamoid for a boat being built in Canada.
If you have trouble finding it, let me know and I will check with our canvas
shop.
