This has been a very fun thread to watch develop. I've held off posting
very much lately, while I tried to find a way to send just plain text, or
at least text that was plain enough to keep Georgs happy. I also just
figured out that if I hit "REPLY," then the TWL will get rich-formatted
text. If I select the address from my address book, however; then it will
not. Sort of neat how you can send different formatting to different
individuals.
As for this hypothetical highly efficient trawler owned by the insurance
agent: I'd like to buy one of those. Where are they for sale at? :-)
More seriously, however; we had a long discussion on the Multihulls List a
couple of years ago about a 40+ foot trimaran "trawler," that could be as
fuel efficient as this. (I'm assuming that the insurance agent was only
figuring fuel consumption into his hourly operating cost.) It had a
wave-piercing type of hull, which was sort of a new concept at the time.
Mind you, the folks in the MHL did not call it a trawler; but I think that
it would meet the definition that seems to be accepted on this list. It
was a semi-displacement hull with a WLL of a little more than 40 feet. It
made San Francisco to Honolulu on 185 gallons of fuel, averaging ten knots.
It then went on to Australia on less than 400 gallons. If this boat ran
at six knots, then it burned less than a quart an hour. It had two diesel
engines of 27 hp each, but would only run on one when fuel consumption
needed to be minimized. If you want to see a picture of the boat, then
pick up an advertising flier for the Yanmar diesel outboards. These are the
engine used for the trip. I'm working off of memory, so the flier may have
more accurate information.
The amazing thing is that this was only a prototype to test a concept.
After he made Australia, he shipped the boat home and retired it; and
subsequently built a 60 footer of a similar design. I remember him saying
in an article in Multihulls Magazine that he wanted the performance of a
100 footer for the price of a 40 footer, hence his design. It would
average a little better than 21 knots on about 250 hp, and was intended to
break the round-the-world speed record. This is the minimum speed that
would be required to do that. This boat could probably also meet the 50
cent per hour mark at about six knots. Unfortunately, that boat hit a rock
and sank after about a quarter of the way around.
I have found an old MHL posting that I happened to save, and which covered
this in some detail. I'll forward it if anyone wants to see it; or if I
get several requests perhaps it would be better to post it to the list. I
had the guy's site bookmarked, but this recent software change seems to
have lost that. Also, I've found the guy's web page:
http://www.revolution98.com/indexnf.htm
It would appear as if he generated that page before his latest boat sank,
and has not updated it since. It would not surprise me to see him try it
again.

Subject: Trawler Fuel Economy
Hi all,
One of the many reasons that I am interested in owning a trawler one day
is their reputation for fuel economy. My insurance agent owns a 35'
Marine Trader and reports that he can run it for 50 cents an hour !!!
Can this be true or is he spinning on old sailor yarn. Perhaps I could
take a poll from the group regarding this subject ... how economical is
your trawler ???
Regards,
Scott
Hi Paul
I have been thinking about your computer problem and the answer to the year
2000
Well, here's answer .
Due to your computer problems and the anticipated computer problems
expected as a
result of hardware and programming issues in the Year 2000,
an alternative technology has been created. The goal is to remove all
computers from the desktop by December 31,1999.
Instead, everyone will be provided with an Etch-A-Sketch.
There are many sound reasons for doing this:
No Y2K problems
No technical glitches keeping work from being done.
No more wasted time reading and writing email.
4.No more computer problems for Paul.

Thanks Paul for your interesting comments and observations. I was on the
multihull list for about a year when I was interested in sailboat catamarans.
Your post teased this old appetite a bit. Interesting web page too.
BTW Your email format came through perfect.

Al,
Why should I change? I pick my computer up now and shake it when I get
REAL frustrated with it and it's error messages and keyboard lock-ups.
Are you sure Etch-A-Sketch is a stable technology, or, will I have to
upgrade in 6 months to stay current?
And last but not least, I didn't see a disclaimer in your post saying that
you were not an Etch-A-Sketch dealer and were not associated with the
product. I'd hate for you to start another one of those long boring
bandwidth eating threads on "Commercialism On The List"

Your right Stan,
In this mornings newspaper I saw an ad for a Etch-A-Sketch 2.5 upgrade. I
think I will go back to a Blackboard and chalk if I can find the delete
key, I mean eraser.

Hi Mike ------Happy to make your acquaintance. I was just trying to be a
good samaritan and help Paul with a computer problem. I can't help it if
some found it amusing. My Mother taught me to speak when spoken to so all I
did was answer the mail. I am happy to see something I wrote was meaningful
enough to you to make you sit down and send me a note. I hope this is a way
of making new friends.
Al
PS I don't sell Etch-A-Sketch and my boat isn't for sale either

Al,
I can't believe you're complaining about the other thread not being about
boating and boring people and then you come back with this etch-a-sketch
nonsense. You're perpetuating both of these non-boating threads by adding
your
complaint and comments, not ending it like you claim to wish. Do you
think it
is really going to be interesting to the list to read a lot a messages that
say Aye Aye? If you're going to flame me please do it off list and save the
rest from having to listen to it.
Mike
