Hi All,

I know this sounds crazy but the pump in my sump that services the two
sinks and showers won't shut off for a long time.  I read that cleaning it,
especially the test button will potentially fix this problem.

I don't understand how anyone managed to install it where it is let alone
service it so my thought is to add water to the sump then pour 8 oz of
liquid plumber (the bottle says 16oz) pour more water to flush the hose and
electronic float that night get splashed, let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes
(not the 15 the instructions says) and flush with hot water per the
instructions.

What damage could I cause?  Thanks in advance for your comments and
suggestions.

NO!!!!!!

It's caustic. If it doesn't work, or for some reason the pump goes TU in
the process, not only will you be working in that very tight area as
you've described, but now it will be filled with crap that'll strip your
skin. Literally.

Use laundry detergent, soak it. Rinse, repeat. Then throw out any bar
soap that is used in the fixtures that the sump serves and from then on
use only gel or liquid type detergents. Soap, as you probably know, is
made from rendered fat, and it congeals when it collects in a sump or
hose that doesn't have any scouring action. Then it gets rancid and just
nasty.

A biologic like rid-x or Bio-Clean may help digest some of the gunk, but
takes a while- (days-weeks) and it can't be contaminated with
anti-bacterials that kill it. Bio-Clean works, it's available through
plumbing contractors, probably unavailable where you are, Rid-x might
be. Good to apply when you plan to be away for a couple of days.

Your pump may have the impeller fouled with hair, it would require
removal and dismantle to assess it and clean it. Any shower sump should
be fitted with a hair screen of some sort. Sometimes it's easier in the
long run to do a wholesale demo to gain access to service it than it is
to struggle with it piecemeal and revisit it a couple of times.

Good luck.
