I re-commissioned a Perkins 4-236 by changing the oil, filters, and having
the fuel polished. Then I pulled the injectors, took my turkey baster and a
little plastic hose and sucked some water from the cylinders. One had about
half a cup of water.(Dry stack without a cover for three years in
Louisiana.) filled each cylinder with Marvel Mystery Oil, let it soak for a
week and then foolishly turned the engine over with a large wrench on the
flywheel. That maneuver caused me to squirt Marvel all over the engine room.
After cleaning the mess I took the aforementioned turkey baster and removed
the rest of the oil from the cylinders. Then I spun the engine with the
starter. So far so good.
After replacing the injectors, I bled the fuel system. While bleeding the
injectors the engine started unexpectantly. Dah! After my initial elation I
noticed that I had sprayed a mixture of rusty water, Marvel Mystery Oil, mud
dauber nests, and soot from my dry stack up to the ceiling on our covered
slips all over my boat and the two adjacent White boats. Many hours of
cleaning later we went for a ride. I discovered that when an engine sits for
a long time the engine driven water pump suffers. After replacing it this
engine has run for two thousand hours absolutely trouble free.
