Marilyn, you'll need a converter between USB and RS-232 to suport the
connection to the NMEA interface to your auto pilot. BTW, not all converters
will perform equally. One that seems to work the best and is probably the
most expensive is made by SeaLevel.

Thanks for your advice. I will wire in a 9 pin serial connector and connect
to laptop through a belkin serial adapter. Hopefully that combination might
communicate successfully. When i tried connecting directly to the laptop
using a usb plug, it does not appear to do it.

I've tried the Belkin USB -> serial adapter to get NMEA in/out of my
laptop, and results were, well, there were no results. I've had success
with a U232-P9 converter, it has a small on-board processor of some
sort, and it works. They're available from various sources, Google it.
