Greetings to the Group,

There are at least three different versions of power supplies for

the Z3801A, each with different input voltage requirements.  The required
voltage for each unit can be found on the back of the chassis, in very
small letters, near the power plug.  I strongly recommend not using a
current limited power supply as the peak start-up current will
probably shut the power supply down, especially if the Z3801A  has been
unpowered for some time.  A  surplus transformer, two diodes, and an
electrolytic capacitor are all that is needed.  It will fit nicely inside
the box.  Enjoy.

Corby,
You can find the complete user manual with a quick Google search.  Here's the power requirements from the manual:
Power Requirements
DC Power:
+27 Vdc nominal (19 Vdc ± 0.5 Vdc to 30 Vdc ± 0.5 Vdc operating range). Greater than 23 Vdc ± 0.5 Vdc starting.
-54 Vdc nominal (-60 Vdc ± 0.5 Vdc to -37 Vdc ± 0.5 Vdc operating range). Less than -46 Vdc ± 0.5 Vdc starting.
Input Power: < 25 Watts (nominal)

Cheers,
DaveM

Hi

I seem to recall 1A and 2A respectively. That’s going from decades ago memory so maybe not 100% accurate.

Hi

That last line is the gotcha. If 25W is the “nominal” …. what’s the max? Is the 25W after the 10811 warms up? (I believe it is ….).

I was assuming Lon's question was re the *EXTERNAL *power supplies for
Z3805As.

I have four Z3805As, and they all take a 24VDC input via an XLR connector,
which IIRC was a standard factory configuration.

I use Meanwell GS60A24-P1J desktop power supplies
https://www.jameco.com/z/GS60A24-P1J-MEAN-WELL-60W-24V-2-5A-3-Wire-Table-Top-Power-Supply-with-2-1mm-Plug_1952214.html,
"50W max" (with the stock plug replaced with a female XLR connector, of
course). They work great.

The killer is the inrush current at turn-on, which is not specified.  I
mitigated this for my Z3801 with an ICL.  Simple and cheap.

Hi

The original question from Corby was about max input current on the Z3805. 50W at 24V is pretty much right at 2A …. Is the real answer 1.83? Who knows ...
