In this week’s Parsha we are commanded to love G-d with all our heart, soul
and money. Many ask how we can be commanded to love, and how real that love
could be if we only have it because we’re commanded to.
Rabbi Akiva Eiger offers an enlightening explanation. He says that when we
realize what people and G-d have done for us, the natural response is for
us to appreciate it. When someone loves us, it’s natural for us to love
them back, especially when we realize how pure and real that love is. The
commandment is then to understand, realize and appreciate how much G-d
loves us and does for us, which will naturally lead to us loving Him back.
By extension, this lesson is true of all our relationships. Focusing on how
much people love us will increase our love of them, and their love for us.
Quotation of the week:
“Excellence is not being the best; it is doing your best."
