All hands--
Great Loop List is informative, it's entertaining and it's free--but
it does cost money to operate the thing, plus a whack of volunterer
time.
Since inception, I have happily covered the costs myself, because I
have the same passion you do for messing about in boats. If the truth
were known, many years into it, I still can't wait to get into the
digest every morning to see what's being discussed.
But I no longer own and operate Trawler Fest, so there is not even
faint business motivation for me to continue to underwrite the costs.
In 2004, after some of you started a thread on how to make the List
self-supporting, I set up a PayPal account for donations--and many of
you stepped forward with a contribution.
For three years, my book-keeper has been telling me I should make the
call for donations an annual event. So, at last, here I am:
If you enjoy the List, and if want it to continue and grow, please
lend a hand by contributing toward expenses. A donation of just $10
or $25 a year will prove immensely helpful.
To make a voluntary contribution via PayPal or a credit card, please
go to
http://www.trawlersandtrawlering.com/supportgreatlooplist.html.
On the same page, you'll find an address if you wish to contribute by
check or money order.
Have no fears, you won't be badgered about making a donation. Unless
someone posts a question or comment, I'll be reporting to you monthly
only on fund-raising progress, and publicly thanking those who have
stepped forward.
Please help make the List self-supporting.

Jon:
While I am no historian, Georgs is legit. He (I think) started
Trawler Fest, Trawlers and Trawlering and all the "lists" including
Great Loop List. He has contributed very much money, time and
creativity to our "trawlering" pastime and boating in general, and
while some folks many not agree with everything he does or says, he
is sincere and honest, IMVHO.
Yes, I think the asking for donations to keep this list going is
right in line. I just sent a modest donation because I think it (and
he) are worth it.
Make your own choice.
