Holding tank problems

23 year old President 41 with a problem pumping out the holding tank.  Checked and repaired leaks in pumpout hoses and still have the problem.  I can get to a part of the top of the tank and this is the same end as the discharge hose. I think that the problem is a possible clogged tank?  Should I cut a hole in the top of the tank and clear the line? Or what?  Any ideas short of replacing the tank.  Thanks

Peter,

If you have a odor filter in the vent line, and if you have not
physically removed it, please do so. If this filter is wet, no
venting will occur.

And if a bird, mouse, rat, small animal, next of such creatures etc
etc are in these vent lines, no venting will occur....

Should have a tank access port anyway so install one. Make sure you
have plenty of fresh air when you install it.

But before that, if the tank is not too full, take some stiff but
pliable plastic hose that you buy from the big box store and using
your topside pump-out connection, gently push the empty hose down to
determine if there is a clog. The hose might be strong enough that
with gentle prodding, the blockage will be cleared. If not, a quick
blast of water might clear it but this will create a mess.

Please be gentle. This hose trick may only work if the bends in the
pump-out hose are gentle and not too numerous.

If this hose trick works, or even if it does not, strongly encourage
you to dispose of the hose. Please do not consider reusing it.

Do NOT use air pressure except if you want to try to blow out your
vent lines outboard.... only outboard... Air pressure on any part of
the water portion of this system is just inviting trouble.

If the hose trick does not work, install the tank access cover and
clean out. Then, run fresh water into the tank from topside, and see
what happens. take it from there...

I had a problem with being unable to pump out. The line at the bottom
of the tank was clogged

I bought one of the hose blaster devices from Home depot. It is a
rubber bladder that fits on the end of a hose. You put it in the pump
out deck fitting and it expands so that water pressure is built up in
the discharge line and forces clog back into the tank. Be sure your
vent is working or the tank will expand and possibly break. Water
pressures from the dock should not create any problem with the
connections unlike air pressure which can get much higher.

I had to do this a few time to break up whatever and it has run fine
now for years.

I now also close the valve at the bottom of the tank so solids cannot
filter down into the discharge line between pumpouts.

how is it plumbed?  is there a dip tube from the top?  if so, check that
it's not metal and not corroded...  if the dip tube is metal, as it was on
older hatteras, if will corrode and break off, leaving and increasingly
large amount of waste in the tank.

it' not hard to fix, although unpleasant.. pull the dip tube (shoudl be on a
plate) and replace with PVC.
