5/31 Milford, Connecticut Audubon coastal center. 9:45am-1PM. sunny,
58-68F, high tide receding.
Many visitors today, as well as class visits.
Our purple martin colony is extremely active. I counted 26 PMs flying
around our gourd nests- some popping in and out with nesting material. I
believe our ospreys have hatched a chick or two. The female was on the
nest most of the morning, with her head down-possibly feeding hatchlings.
Male was on his perch then flew and got a fish which he shared with the
female. Third osprey has been flying around the marsh from nest across the
marsh.
On the marsh: 18 Great egrets-far out with 4 Snowy egrets, 9 D.C.
Cormorants, 3 Oystercatchers foraging as the tide receded , 2 Least Terns
flying over the marsh, 10 Mute swans and a pair of Tree swallows flying
over.
On the grounds: 1 Northern Mockingbird, 1 Catbird, 2 Nest boxes with House
sparrows, 1 Nest box with Tree swallows, 5 Robins, Mourning doves, Common
Grackles, A cardinal, House finch and starlings.
One Crow was sitting on top of the roof eating a baby bird :(
