View all threadsDear All, In the hope of avoiding the need for a board meeting next Wednesday, I'm providing this update on recent and coming events. Let me know if you have questions about any of this or feel that we do need to meet. Thanks. I'll be sending a separate message about the schedule for AEFL Week. Deborah 1. Minutes of July meeting: Attached for your review. 2. Strategic priorities group: NCL comment opposing addition of citizenship question to 2020 Census was submitted well before the August 7 deadline. The text of the comment and information about three amicus briefs that NCL has signed on to have been posted on the NCL blog and sent out in an email blast to the membership listserv. The group will meet soon to discuss next steps, including possible addition of Census-related info to the AEFL Week resources on the website. 3. Literacy Leadership Awards task group Awards: The group has identified a new Literacy Leadership Award category for 2018: Emerging Voice for Adult Literacy. The group has also established a new award: the Barbara Bush Lifetime Achievement in Adult Literacy Award. The group revised the award nomination form and solicitation letter, and sent it out on the membership listserv on July 26. Deadline for submissions is August 20, and the group will send its recommendations to the full board by August 27. The solicitation material is attached. Awards event: Is scheduled for Tuesday 25 September, 4:00-6:00 pm, in Cannon 340. The McKeon Group will provide logistical support for the event (this is the group that provided support for the briefing in May). 4. Board nominations task group: The group has met and is contacting potential nominees. The group will present its recommended slate to the full Board before the September Board meeting. 5. AEFL Week Michele has updated the logo and distributed it through the membership listserv Deborah has updated the AEFL Week resources page on the website; the strategic priorities group may identify other material to be added. https://national-coalition-literacy.org/adult-education-and-family-literacy-week/aefl-week-resources/ Deborah is working with offices on the Hill to get resolutions recognizing the week passed in the House and the Senate Schedule: Involves multiple conflicts no matter what we do. Follow-up email to come. 6. Communications: The public charge rulemaking matter is much in the news recently. Deborah has asked Judy Mortrude and Catrina Doxsee to author a post on it for the NCL blog. 7. Conferences: AAACE has asked Deborah, along with Sharon Bonney from COABE and Becky Dyer from the Barbara Bush Foundation, to participate in a plenary session panel on the importance of advocacy at the 2018 conference in Myrtle Beach. The panel will take place on Friday 5 October. 8. Administrative support: Alex Suchman will be moving on after the AEFL Week events in September. Alex has made some recommendations for a replacement. Deborah is working on this.
