I recall a couple of weeks back some members of the list
speaking about changing the oil in the fuel pump on the
Lehman. I beleive that they were referring to the high
pressure pump ( but I could be mistaken ). I have been
trying to figure out how or where they are performing
this oil change and for the life of me can't figure it
out. I would appreciate any help.
thank you

Paul,
Without a picture this is going to be kind of sketchy but I'll try my best.
As I understand it, the oil in the injector pump should be changed every
time you change the engine oil. The reason being that as the injector pump
wears the tolerances can open up and small amounts of fuel can get into the
pump oil diluting it and reducing the protection the oil affords. There are
three screw in plugs that are used in the changing of the oil. There is one
on the underside of the pump towards the forward end. This is the drain
plug. There is another on the top of the pump where one pours the new oil
in. And finally there is a third plug on the face of the pump, slightly
more then half way up. The oil in the pump should come up level to this
middle screw.
The procedure I was taught is to remove the top screw plug first (allowing
air into the oil chamber. Then you can remove the bottom plug and drain out
the old oil. Replace the bottom plug and remove the middle plug. Pour oil
into the top hole until it starts to leak out of the middle plug. Replace
the middle and top plugs and you are done. You can also begin the process
by first removing the middle plug. If fuel has leaked into the oil chamber
the oil level will be higher then this middle plug and the amount that leaks
out will give you some indication as to how much fuel has migrated into the
oil.
There is also a screw plug that is used to bleed air out of the fuel system.
You'll know if you start to open the wrong plug as fuel will spray out under
pressure.
Hope that helps.

Paul,
The posts were referring to the Simms high pressure pump. What year is
your Lehman? I have a 1988 Super 135, and it does not have the Simms pump.
The pump used is lubricated by the main engine oil so that particular
maintenance is not required.

Paul,
If you have the 135 hp Lehman you do not need to change the high pressure
pump oil. The high pressure pump oil change procedure applies to the older
versions.
