We took an idyllic cruise this past week on Lake Superior to the Apostles
Islands National Park and Sand Island in particular. Sea conditions were
right for visiting the sea caves on the island which we did. They are an
interconnected maze of caves and chambers with enough water depth to
explore in a dinghy or kayak. The big lake has carved these into the face
of cliffs with the heavy seas from the northeast. Fascinating with the
variegated sandstone showing bands of reds, yellows, browns, and tans.
All of this with a background of blue sea and green forest above. Its
hard to describe until you have taken a dinghy through them.

After lunch, we then ran the dinghy up on the nearby beach and took the
park service trail through old growth forest with some virgin timber
still standing. The trail ended at a quaint historic lighthouse at the
north point of the island. The structure resembled a church with the
light tower being where a church steeple would have been. Again, very
interesting. Sand Island is one of the most interesting islands in the
Apostles group. It also has the ruins of an old village founded by
Norwegian fishermen more than a century ago.

July is the prime time on Superior and we have enjoyed it there.
