I have to agree with Peter and John on this one. There are two factors that stand out in my mind. First is the theft aspect. It doesn't matter if the files are available, if they are copies of commercial products then it's stealing the software. Also, my experience is most of this stuff is copy protected anyway. So, you end up spending more time breaking the copy protection or using stolen codes than using the software. Its not worth your time or energy. If you want to seriously consider a product, get the support of the vendor to insure you have the best experience.
As far as risk is concerned, an argument can be made that the chances of running into bad code or virus laden content is low, but why take the risk? The navigation part of your boating is one of the most important aspects of safety. Don't take the chance that an old or buggy version of code was downloaded and leaves your host system registry a mess. Just a thought.
