BC Ferries Queen of the North went down last night after hitting a rock
south of Prince Rupert. At around 1:45 Am this morning the May Day was sent
out. All the passengers and crew just over 100 of them dawned life jackets
and took to the life rafts.

Recovery of all the passengers and crew by the CCG and a couple of gillnet
boats from a small coastal community.

Wow!  Wright Sound is DEEP and there are no evident hazards anywhere near
mid-channel.  There is a rock close to shore in a little bay at N53 18.6
W129 12.7.  I wonder if this could be a repeat of the episode in the San
Juans many years back when the ferry Elwa went aground while the skipper
ducked in to Grindstone Harbor on Orcas Island to give his girlfriend a
toot.

In case you can't find this area on the charts, it is in the vicinity
of the Southern Entrance to Grenville Channel.
Gil Island is directly south of that entrance.

There are simply NO charted hazards except near the beach, anywhere
in this area.

This accident is going to be interesting to keep tabs on.

The latest news release from BC Ferries states that as of this AM,  two
people are unaccounted for. They are a couple and although people had said
that they had been seen with the rescued group in Hartley Bay the officials
cannot locate them or confirm their whereabouts.

Knowing this ferry fairly well, it is quite possible that these people were
travelling with a motor home or camper and were sleeping in it on the car
deck. This action is not supposed to happen but despite routine crew patrols
still does happen.

Hope is that they will be found somewhere in all the confusion.
