Shaw University's rising Junior and student athlete (Football), Amarion M'baye was selected as a participant in the Data Analytics for Science Immersion Experience (DASIE) at Carnegie Mellon University this summer.
This 2-week summer experience (June 2023) connected its participants with their partners, Accenture, Microsoft, and DOW, to experience seminars, lectures, and training in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Analytics. Students were able to visit Carnegie Mellon University, Microsoft headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA and DOW headquarters in Midland, MI, and more. In addition to connecting with corporate partners, other students, and all participants were also treated to a sponsored excursion for team building and engagement.
Opportunities like these are shared with students at Shaw University by the Experiential Learning and Career Development Center and faculty partners across all departments.
"There is a widespread need for scientists with advanced data skills and a national need to recruit and retain emerging scientists from underrepresented groups," says Cassandra Rios, Program Manager for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Mellon College of Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
Amarion shared his experience with Morgan Ray, Director of the Experiential Learning and Career Development Center.
Mrs. Ray: What were your top three favorite things about this experience?
Amarion: My top 3 favorite experiences were touring the Dow plant and talking to all the different representatives of the company and their different roles. Another one was getting a chance to have office hours with the representatives to get to connect more personally. Lastly, I enjoyed meeting the other students here and learning from them, especially with me recently changing my major.
Mrs. Ray: What would you want to share with other Shaw students about opportunities like this? Why would you encourage them to take advantage of opportunities like this?
Amarion: I encourage Shaw Students to take advantage of these types of opportunities because it gives them a chance to network with people directly from the companies. Also, you will meet and learn so many new things. Before I came to the DASIE program, I didn't really know what Data Analytics was and leaving after a week I networked and got an opportunity to go to a sports analytics conference in the fall. So just push yourself.
In addition to participating in the program and networking, all students received a stipend and expenses were covered by the program to ensure participation was meaningful and without barriers such as housing and transportation to the university.
